    Shopping
    Marija Skobe

I bet some of you are getting nauseous at the mere mention of the the word… and some eyes have lit up like little diamonds that just can't wait for someone to notice and admire them.

Yes, I think the latter are mostly girls.. J

What is it that's so irresistable about shopping? Imagine: you walk into a store, your eyes wander over every product displayed on freshly scrubbed glass shelves while the manneqins are adorned with that amazing new fashion craze you're certain would look so great on you… and, oh my God, just look at that bag a few feet over! True enough, the color isn't something, but they say that's in this season. Very well then…that's more important today anyway…who cares if you actually like it, as long as it's the latest style, right?

An then you notice tons of other trinkets you barely even knew existed before, but… it's in, and suddenly you realize that they are exactly what you need and they becomethe most important thing of the moment… And so on…and on and on… a never-ending circle.

Summer is an ideal time for wandering the stores. Those huge SALE signs are irresistable. You know you'll find great discounts so you happily walk in. After a few precious moments, your enthusiasm disappears as you realize that all the good stuff is still expensive, despite the sale and the discounts. Then you turn to look at things that you absolutely have to get simply because they are on sale. So what if you will only wear them once? For such a ridiculous price, it must be worth buying! It's different abroad. For example, summer sales in Germany are really great because you really can get quality products at a great price. Also, accesories are cheap, and they look nice. It is the goal of big stores to sell their stuff, so you can get well known quality brands for nearly nothing.

What is my point? Sales are great because when prices get cut twice, usually they reperesent the actual value of the particular item. Shopping is really one of the ultimate pleasures for girls and women – it's great to walk the stores, look around a shop with a friend, and then later sit down for some coffee and talk about all the stuff you've bought and all the stuff you didn't, but would if you only had money J

Many men think that they can solve a problem if they hand some money over to their girlfriend, wife, friend and tell them – here, go and buy yourself something nice. Some psychiatrists even tell their depressed female patients to go out and buy something for themselves. However, can owning a new pair of expensive shiny shoes really satisfy and please a woman?

I've had it happen to me that I would buy something only because it was on sale or because a that moment I thought I needed it. I would be sad if I couldn't get that particular thing at that precise moment and I'd think that the world would be som much nicer if only I could have it… and then, I would get it. And instead of happines or pleasure at owning it, I would feel indiference. Material things really can't make you happy.

Someone once said: «If what you have is what you are, and you lose what you have, who are you then?»

Maybe my writing this column is influenced by reading a book about a shopping-o-holic. But when you see people thinking that owning things can bring them happiness, you stop and wonder. Shopping is great, an awesome thing, presumed we don't overdo it…. It's not neccessary to have everything that's in in your closet. It will change in a few months anyway.

Girls, it's much better to have less but with real quality, than a million rags you'll never wear J !

The new employee stood before the paper shredder looking confused. "Need some help?" a secretary, walking by, asked. "Yes," he replied, "how does this thing work?" "Simple," she said, taking the fat report from his hand and feeding it into the shredder. "Thanks, but where do the copies come out?"
